Speedometer problem
My speedo sticks often and at unusual times, I have a 00 ex coupe. It sticks at 20mph even when I'm going 50, the tach still still works as well as the gas and temp. I haven't had anyone under the hood that would disrupt anything. I hate to say it but if I hit the top of the dash it sometimes works. I have thought it could be the VSS or a wiring problem. Sometimes when it is working and I'm going say 40 it will bounce to 0 and then back to 40. I have no idea whats going on. Any ideas?
Your VSS would throw a code, does you CEL work? It's not uncommon for the speedo itself to go bad, mine did at 168,000 km, which coincided with my timing belt change, almost handy timing... After searching I had found a lot of other people who had speedos go bad as well.
No the trip and odometer stop working when the speedo stops, but works again when the speedo decides to work. No codes come up either. does the vss have a voltage from it being it is all electronic.
I'm having this exact problem in my 2000 Civic LX that you described. Even down to hitting the dash and it started working (this only worked for me one time - might have been coincidence). When I drive it for about 10 minutes, it will usually start working again - but then erratically stop and start working. If I inch forward in my driveway, the speedometer will jump back and forth between 18-22 mph and as I go faster, it will center over 20 mph. The OD and Trip do not work when the speedometer is crazy. The tach works fine all the time.
What did you find out? I don't want to replace the VSS and then find out it's something else.

I have the same problem with a '92 Si hatch with 170,000 miles on it. To get it too work I will smack the dash or even tap the front of the cluster. Everything I have read seems to indicate I need to replace the speedometer not the whole cluster.
Just an update. I decided to take out the instrument cluster to see if there was anything I could fix. I thought that maybe something was loose since hitting the dash was affecting if it worked. Got the unit out and noticed that all the screws on the back were about 1/16th of a turn loose from being snug. So I snugged them all down and
re-installed. It has been a week and the speedometer works good with no more sticking. This could something to check before replacement.
