i had teh same exact problem, mine figured itself out though....just took a few days of guessing my speed. And actually when i hit my brakes the needle shot exactly to where it should be, then when i let off the brakes it went back down to zero.
my tach signal is still screwd up....anyone know where the tachometer sensor is? Seems like itd be located somewhere near the tranny as well. (sorry about the thread jack man)

ya open your hood look down on top of your trans, youll need a wrench to remove it, they typically just go out, my girls speedo did it once, we were going down the interstart like 75 mph, the the neddles shot to like 130 lol, like a hit some pretend NOS....lol
and more then likey youll have to replace it
