I think the CEL is fine.

Baker has a good point about the possibility of overcooling because of a bad thermostat. If that were the case, you would see that the temperature gauge on the dash always stays at or near cold instead of coming up to the normal reading of about halfway up.

And do check that spark timing because being even a little off on the timing will kill your gas mileage with no other symptoms other than less horsepower as well.
