Timing Belt Snapped On a 96 1.4 Civic Need Help ?

Hi a friend of mine has a 1.4 1996 ek3 civic the timing belt snapped on it.
they tried tow starting to see would it turn over but all the got was a tearing noise so they stopped straight away anyone have an idea wether there is a point of going to all the work of putting a timing belt back on.or has damage been done help needed fast ?? thanks !

Once in a while, for reasons unclear to me, the engine is spared after the timing belt snaps. Properly install a new belt and then compression test the cylinders (click Compression link in my signature).
You could check the valves with a leakdown test before replacing the belt. Set the cam by hand so all valves on the cylinder under test are closed.
It's also not that hard to just put a new belt on and see if it will run.
