Default Transmission/Clutch problems: what's going on?

So after about a day of making a humming/spinning noise while in neutral when the clutch was not depressed, our 2007 Civic EX - 5 Speed Manual will now not shift into either 4th or 5th gear (it won't let us even put the gearshift in the respective positions. Additionally, it will not easily go into 1st gear.

I assume that whatever it is will be ridiculously expensive to resolve, but we obviously need our car.

What is likely to be going on here? Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Sounds like a bad bearing in the transmission. Don't drive any more or it is likely to go totally to smithereens. Possibly your most certain, least expensive option is to swap in a used transmission.

Alright, so they got done tearing it down and said that there must have been a leak and that the whole thing is pretty much shot to heck. Said that the only options were to get a new one or to reubild.

They quoted me $2500 for the whole job. I'm not capable of performing this job and I don't know anybody else that is, either. I'm already out $475 for hacing them take it out and inspect it. I called the dealer and they said they only install new rebuilds and that they couldn't even find one right now.

I guess I pretty much have no choice at this point but to go for the rebuild and that as far as cost is concerned that it will be my best option., right?

dunno if it will be the best option cost-wise, but if you need the car and the stealership can't find a used replacement.... then maybe its your only choice?

really sorry to hear about your problems... Honda just isn't what it used to be. (pre-2000's)
