Default Transmission woes

Gentlemen I need some advice. I have a 91 civic ex auto and it seems like I have to "warm up" the fluid in the tranny for it to shift. ie it won't change until you've driven it a while in 1st. Now it won't shift at all. Any ideas what it may be and how bad it is? Thanks

O.o changed the fluid lately? Is there enough fluid in it?

Sorry it took a while to get back but I'm at work now. Yeah I changed it twice. Once to dexron then after reading something here, to the Honda stuff.

Also, I haven't noticed a leak at all,(except for engine oil) but the dipstick is so small how do you know what the correct level is except taking it all out, measuring it and replacing!? (It sounds like a silly question when i was typing it)

If the cable link from the throttle to the transmission is stuck / not working, the transmission may think that you have the gas floored all the time and it will stay in low gears to a high rpm.

I had a lokk at the cable when I was trying to work out why the engine would cut out sometimes but after cleaning my ICV that stopped. The car used to take a while to shift (would do reverse just fine) especially when cold, but once warmed up it wouldn't have that problem again and would shift into all gears just fine until left for an extended period of time. If you came back 2hrs later you were fine, but say left for the day while working, you'd have to go through it again.
