Default Turbo Setup

i was thinking, can the majority of the turbo parts needed for a homemade build be taken off a existing turbo, such as a stock turbo found in a scrap yard? does it matter if it is a diesel, or a petrol.
As my landlord for my house has a garage full of spare car parts, some of which seem to be parts from existing turbo cars, and as these would be obtainable i wondered if it was possible.
sorry if it was a stupid question..

Needs to be gas, and the only things youcan't use are the manifold and the oil fittings, pretty much.

ok kool thanks for the speedy replies, the manifold id guessed that that simply wouldnt fit?
is there any perticular reason not to use a diesel turbo? do they work in a different way? and the oil fittings is that because the lines etc jus wouldnt be the right size length?
so the only thing i cant use from a diesel turbo is the actual turbo? and of course the manifold
