what should i do??
ok..i have a 95 civic with a stock d15b7 engine and it burns oil..i dont know what a lot is but it def burns it..its got approx 170-180k miles..i just have a couple questions..i did a compression test and from left to right..it was 173,171,135,165...the 171 spark plug was the only wet one.should i replace my valve seals with mileage as high as it is??.i was told not to because it may cause to much crankcase blowby or something like that since it has so many miles..is that true?i also get soot on my back bumper,im guessing from burnt oil..should i do the valve seals or just let it go and keep adding oil?any help is much appreciated.
I can at least tell you, as most anyone can, that the 135 cylinder is way out of spec. Bad rings should be the culprit here. The blow by theory is interesting, but I cant comment on it.
Good luck.
Good luck.
As mentioned, cylinder 3 (135 psi) is the main concern. Doing a dry versus wet compression test should distinguish whether the rings or valve seals (or a blown head/head gasket) are the problem.
Sounds like you have bad rings especially on the one with low compression. The "wet" test is to pour about a teaspoon of oil (not much more) into each cylinder and see if the compression increases. If it does that means the rings are bad.
Mine got like that and I changed the valve seals but it didn't help any. I think if the rings are bad, it will smoke worse when you floor it, bad valve seals will smoke about the same all the time.
Burning off more than 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles is considered excessive.
