If you want to get that kind of horsepower then you should go for a DOHC VTEC. I understand you might have had problems in the past but a car engine is just a lung and the DOHC VTEC will let you breathe easier to ge that horsepower goal. Addtionally, there's not much difference between a 1.5 and a 1.8 L engine as far as mpg goes. If you truly despise VTEC then go with what Ticker said, its a good engine but you'd only be making it harder on yourself...

I have heard that the B Series engines dont have crap for torque, but dont trust me on that one I dont know very much about engines and own a D Series so I wouldnt know.

yea a whole 3 more ft lbs of tq at a much higher less accessed rpm point. The D16 tq curve is better than the B16's and actually it's hp curve is right on with the B16's but from about 6000rpm on. A bolt on B16 makes around 145whp. I have seen bolt on D's with a stg 1 crower cam get in the low 130's on whp
