Preparing for boost, bevvy of questions please help
First off I wanted to praise this forum as its been an amazing source of information.
I also wanted to send a shout out to petes grocery turbo list...very, very cool.
OK. So I have a 99 ex with the y8. Ive decided boost is a must at this point. At the end, Id like to be looking at about 225-250 whp. I have read up on it, but have several questions i was hoping the experienced guys could comment on:
1. What internal upgrades did you folks go with before boosting. Im thinking stage 2 cam/springs/retainers, add a cam gear, lightweight crank and ac pulleys, port the head a decent amount, shot peen the rods, have the oil gallies on the crank champhered, stud the motor with ARP, and get new pistons. Top it off with a good fuel pump and maybe injectors. My question is how much of this is necessary? I dont want to skimp on the turbo app, so i suppose the less money spent on internals the better. I know people have boosted stock internals but Id like to do as much as I can w/o going overboard. This is a daily driver and I rely on mpg.
2. If I buy a turbo cam and pistons in anticipation of boosting this coming spring, will the car run correctly using turbo minded components in the meantime?
3. Ive seen some really expensive BOV's. What the heck is the difference between those and a 50 dollar deal.
4. What are some good alternatives on the DSM T-25 that Pete reccommends on the grocery list? I cant seem to find very many of them locally or on ebay at a good price.
Thanks alot guys, appreciate the time.

I dont know a lot about building your internals but I can help you out with the BOV and turbo questions. Blow off valves arent too tough to buy, you really shouldnt spend more then $50-60 for one. The DSM 1g's are pretty decent. Greddy, turbo xs, blitz all make good ones. I would look on ebay and stick with name brands. As for the turbo, a T28, t3, t3/t4 or you could go with one of the smaller ones like a td04 or td05 from mitsubishi, all can be found on ebay at decent prices. Just make sure their pretty clean and dont have any oil leaks or shaft play. Good luck!
250whp for a d-series is pretty substainial, considering your starting out at 110whp. In my opinion your going to have to do something with your internals, fuel pump and injectors, and remember to put aside money for tuning. Forty, Pete and Marty know alot about the d-series, one of them could probly be more specific.
For 250 whp youre going to need lots of upgrades. If it were me I would do the following. Turbo cam, upgraded valvetrain, commetic headgasket and ARP Headstuds. SRP Pistons (9;0;1) and Eagle H Beam rods with arp hardware. RC 550 injectors, walbro 255 lph fuel pump....youre also going to need a 3 bar map sensor to hide boost from the ECU. I might even go as far as getting a better oil pump. With those components and a good turbo kit and an excellent tuner you could run 2 stages of boost.......250 whp for street and up to 300 for the track. Just remember, your stock clutch isnt going to last long, so look into a stage 1 or 2 racing clutch. Id get a good name brand stage 1, so u dont give ur left leg such a workout. If u go higher than 250 whp youre going to want to look into axle upgrades as well as suspension...remember this car was not meant to see that much power, so things will need to be upgraded. If u want any more advice feel free to PM me anytime and I will get back to you at my earliest convience.
Thanks alot for the responses guys.
My budget is kinda tricky. I have a built chevy motor and alot of chevy parts im looking to trade to a local shop for the motor work this fall. The turbo kit im going to piece together over the winter and set it up come spring. Id say my budget is about 2500 (give or take) for internals, and another 15 or so for the turbo components. If the tune ends up costing me over that, hey its gotta happen. 200-225 whp is acceptable, but I dont mind the mods. Am I retarded to dump 4k into a y8? I really really dont want to swap.
I have already installed a Centerforce stage 2 clutch, so i am covered there. I have upper and lower strut towers and a SSR rear sway.
Thanks alot for the knowledge!
