Boost is awesome. No matter how you get it.

Ok, as far as tuning goes, I recommend it obviously. You can probably get another 25Hp from a good tune but it just wasn't cost effective for me personally. I monitored my motor with a wideband and the FMU is pretty conservatively rich running ~ 11.5:1 A/F which is safe, but not ideal for making power. If you have hte cash and your local is worth a crap, get a tune, but it isn't 100% required. You could drive it for a year plug and play style while you save for a tune or learn to tune yourself.
Stage 1 upgrade is around 500 bucks.. ... but as far as tuning also i noticed there was a plug in Hondata unit with the upgrading tuning already preset from JR for around 1500.. but seems a bit higher than just buyin the s300 and getting it tuned at a shop.. but its as you said, its whether i have decent shop around.. currently i am looking as our local Modified motorsports tuner shop just lost both mechanics and had to shut down..
