i woulnt buy a junkyard turbo.. but thats me.. you would never know how the car was maintained and how it was driven. spend the money and get a new or reman. turbo.

Well if you did go to a scrapyard and halled a turbo off of a car, check to see if there is much shaft play, and if you can get it cheep enough, but still want to ensure that it will work, you can get turbo rebuild kits for about $100 off the net

I have a saab 900 (mid 80's) t3 turbo junk yard style in my 95 civic for like a $100. I'd do it again. The junk yard one lasted for 1 full year 15k miles. I would assume that would be typical, b/c a lot of the junkyard turbos have 100k+ miles on them, so you may get 10k to 50k miles or luck out and it lasts for 10 years. who knows?

Just make sure you are getting the right a/r you want and check for shaft play (like Fiirkan said) and oil residue coming out the seams. Do some research. I have .48 a/r turbine and .42 a/r compressor. I like the response around 3000 rpm full boast, but I'm researching for an even quicker spool up. I want something that is fast from a stop and also can punch it at freeway speeds.

If I were to drag I would go with a bigger a/r, but not for street use.

Stick with oil cooled only, it's easier, just my opinion.

Good luck!

Oil cooled IS Much easier. Junk yard turbos are good, but it depends. If ur putting a custom kit together and know what youre doing, its a good idea, but the turbine is the main part of the system, and you shouldnt cheap out on it, considering a good garrett can be found on ebay for 250 or so.

most of the good turbos that i have found on eBay were like $500 just for the turbo and BOV, i couldn't find any inexpensive ones
