Like I said, an '04 would make a bad DD... if I have a choice, it's going to be an '05. But if I find another '04 for $12,xxx when I'm actually looking to buy you can bet I'll be buying it

What about the older WRX models? How reliable are they with the higher milages and such? Thats probably what id be getting (plus i just love the styling of them) lol

For an example, if i found a '98 WRX with 120,000 (or so) on it for $8k to $9k would it be worth it? Or should I just save my dinero and get a newer model?

^ I've heard that VWs are hard to work on and that if you break a part it's expensive to fix so I have not bothered with learning about them. I know Forty owned a Jetta but I have no experience with those cars.

VW's = specialty tools for everything. Seriously, I've seen the specialty tool cabinets in the local VW dealership. It's freaking ridiculous. Also, they've had issues with their distributors and coils for over 10 years now; I know a TDI wouldn't have the issue (being a diesel), but it speaks a lot about the company as a whole when their cars don't start when it's raining.

Kenny, Subarus are, and have always been, extremely reliable. Personally, I think $8-$9k on a '98 is pretty steep (you can buy an '04/'05 WRX for a little more than that), but as far as reliability goes, just watch the head gaskets. When owners don't have maintenance done on time, they like to start leaking (on newer cars it's usually external and easy to diagnose, on cars like you're looking at, it's almost always internal. If the car is running and the coolant reservoir is bubbling, it's usually a good indication that your head gaskets are leaking lol).

Kenny, WRX's didn't hit North America until the 2002 Model year, the STi arrived for 2004 model year. Anything else is going to have to be imported. Just not worth it. Bugeye WRXs can be found with <100K for $8-9k, that is certainly your best bet.

Oh, and *ahem* **** VW!

That is all

[jacked]
The VW TDIs are great cars. My folks have a 2000 Jetta TDI that gets about 50 mpg average. The newer ones don't get anything like that, but in that series, they were fantastic. Don't get one with more than 100k miles on it, though, and that holds true for any German car. Oh, and my 98 Passat wasn't all that hard to work on, but I suppose the newer ones might need more specialized. Fun little bastards though.
