Default Tire size question. Help

Hi,

I have a 1998 civic sedan lx with stock steel wheels. The tire size is 185/65/14. I have a friend that is willing to sell me 4 tires at a very good price that are barely used, but they are 185/60/14. Would these tires cause a problem with my vehicle? Thanks for any help you could give.

Actually you are better off with a little bit wider tire like the 185/60/14. A wider tire will have less side roll in your normal everyday cornering which causes your front tires to wear out prematurely.

I have a similar wheel question. I have been thinking of switching my stock 14's for a set of 16's or 17's. Will my speedometer read right? Will I have any other problems? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you can use any size wheel you want, but the trick is sizing your tire correctly. As long as the overall diameter is the same you will have no problems speedo/tire wear wise. Rubbing usually comes down to the offset and width of the wheel. If the offset is off or the wheel is too wide then it will rub the wheelwells while turning/cornering.

here is a link to a good tire size calculator:
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
just plug in your stock size and then an aftermarket size. It will tell you the difference in diameter and how much your speedo will be off by.

As for width, 7.5" is probably the widest you can go (ex: 17x7, 18x7.5... the 2nd number is the width) and the offset should be right around +40mm. Give or take a few millimeters should be ok.
