Default 1990 Civic DX... General help?

Greetings all...

Been lurking for the last two days and finally decided to register. Looking for a little help.

Just picked up a 1990 Civic DX on eBay for $1025 and it seems to run nice, but it feels as if the trans is going. So, looking for a bit of help:

- Being my first Honda, can ANYONE tell me what the difference between D3 & D4 are on my auto-trans? Also, the shifter does not "lock" as it does when you shift into 2nd, Park, or R. I can freely move the **** between N - D3 - D4. Should it be able to do that either?

- When in either drive gear the car picks up slowly. It flips gears at 15mph, 25mph, and then seems to not shift after that... Help? Yes, it seems as if it is high-ending.

ok d3 and d4 are just drive gears... many people use this for power when its needed or to manipulate your rpms to your likeing. but its suppose to move freely nothing wrong with that.

btw think of it as your 3rd gear and your 4th gear. (most auto's have only 4 gears instead of 5)

Well, that second comment:

- When in either drive gear the car picks up slowly. It flips gears at 15mph, 25mph, and then seems to not shift after that... Help? Yes, it seems as if it is high-ending.

Was supposed to be a question... Does it seem like my tranny is going bad with that info.? Let me know what else I can do to help any of you estimate your answers... Oh, and I'll be doing a quick diagnostic of liquids and the such a bit later tonight.

Thanks for the help thus far.

so what your saying is, it get in 2nd gear and revs up like crazy/ wont shift? now this can be one of 2 things that im awair of.

1 your leaving it in 2, or d3, and not realizing this.

2. you have a bad pulse generator. i had this same problem on my hyundai... its a computer chip that tells the car when to shift, that could be fcked up, but iam not sure if hondas have a pulse generator.

you might want to try disconecting the battery, this might restart your system. but i doubt it.

When you have it on D4, the Overdrive (additional gear after third) is on, helping you save gas, and when you have it on D3, the O/D is off
