I have a 98 civic hatch and i think its due time for a change, just a quick question not sure why the manual states 2.9qt- change or 6.2qt-total

Why such a huge difference and is it not like a oil change all the fluid drains if i take out the ATF bolt?

The information tells you that more than half of the AT fluid remains in the transmission when you do basic drain and refill maintenance.

Though not as dramatic, when you change the engine oil, more than half a quart of the old oil remains in the engine.

 

for a automatic tranny ive heard of people draining the fluid, refilling it then driving it abit and then drain it again and refill again....
see your torque converter is full of fluid that will not drain out. so to do a good/decent job youd need to at least drain/refill twice if not 3times for a good swap.
and what ever you do DO NOT HAVE THE SYSTEM FLUSHED!!!!!!!! flushing any automatic tranny will destroy it shortly after! most shops that flush the system use high pressure which will bust free all the dirt BUT the tranny has alot of metal screens inside it that will catch that dirt and clogg the fluid from passing thru... which will overheat the tranny and burn it up pretty fast!!!!

just let gravity drain the fluid! ask any professional tranny shop what they do. that will show you how good they are. if they say true flush then ITS A BAD SHOP!!!! if they say drain and refill they are good.

go to a shop and have them flush it yea it may cost more but i would say that 97% of the fluid gets changed
