Default clutch question

I have a '99 LX with M/% and I was wondering, on average, after how long/how many miles does the clutch need to be replaced? Is there a specific time or mileage when it should be? or is just when it goes out?

Also how do you know when it is going out? My civic is my first car and first manual car, ive had it about 4 months now, and it all runs fine and everything, I'm just curious.

Oh and it has 153k miles.

Thanks.

you can usually tell by how much it slips when you engage the clutch, or if its grabbing really high, i just replaced my clutch at 135,000

Thing is this is my first manual car, and the only manual car I have driven, so I'm not sure if it grabs really high or if it slips, since I don't have anything to compare it to.
