funky sound, comming from the rear
Just like it sounds, funky sound comming from the rear of the car, usualy only audible at speeds 5-10mph and up. It sounds just like I have a big truck with a set of knobby tires rolling around on the pavement.
At first I thought it was just the low profiles on my wheels, but it's actualy been getting worse over time, and even my wife noticed it the other day. I guess i ride around with the music up so i just don't pay attention. Without the radio turned up it's almost unbareable.
Friend of mine gets in today, and notices right away. Told me his Mustang made a similar sound right before the back end locked up and the gearing chewed itself up or something to that effect. Told me I had better get it into a shop pretty soon.
Anyone know of a problem or reason it might be doing this, and or what part/parts I would have to secure to fix the problem if it is indeed the rear end.
It's a 97 2 door civic DX coupe, automatic. Tranny feels like it operates pretty well, to me. Has about 120k miles. Hasn't been abused and most of the regular maint. has been kept up with. No suspension mods, only rims and tires, which are of good quality and shouldn't be making these sounds.
Any help or direction is appreciated.

well since your car doesnt have a rear end
maybe its the wheel bearing in the rear on one side going bad...
jack the rear up and give the wheels a spin and see if you hear any odd sounds....
if so pull the wheel off that side and then pull the drum off and then slap the wheel back on and give it aspin again.... if the noise goes away then i think its the brakes. replace the pads and springs and grease up the adjusting mechanism.
but if the noise is still there then your wheel bearings needs replaced.
ive never had one fail myself YET... but theres only twp moving parts in the rear that could make that noise. brakes or bearing.

Wheel bearings should be replaced every 30K, just so ya know. =P
Also, check your trailing arm bushing. My car was making a similar sound. Turns out I just busted that bushing, forcing some rubbinnn..

Sweet. I will take a look thismorning.
Yeah I knew I didnt have rear wheel drive, so when he suggested that, i though to myself, I don't think there is much back there but some axles and wheels. At least I didn't think I had anything back there that was mechanical. That eases my mind. I will see what I can find out, and if nothing seems to help i will drop it off at the shop monday for a once over. Need a few other minor things done anyway.
Super suggestions guys !
