Default Funky Tranny/Clutch Sound?

Hey guys, i have a question about the clutch or could be tranny...

so i have a 94 ex with the d16 and a 5MT. i just got this car so i'm trying to work out the kinks still, this is the wierdest thing because when i goto let out the clutch about 1/4 - 1/2 way with it in say 1st gear, it will make kind of a grinding/moaning sound but it will not do it all the time and does it less often than not. it sounds to me like a heat shield could be rattling around, but it seems to only happen in 1st gear and when i'm not listening to the radio or something.

it will do it probably about 1/4 of the time, and it does not really matter what the temp of the motor is, but the clutch grabs good and does not slip... do hondas notoriously have some gear noise in the tranny? because it might seem like it could be that, but what stumps me is that it does not happen everytime

if anyone can relate to what i'm talking about, that would be fantastic lol

thanks for the help!

Default RE: Funky Tranny/Clutch Sound?

ok, i'll be the first to admit that i dont know much about these little cars, but i'm wondering if it might be input shaft bearings... i know my I/S bearings are going, and mine dosent make the noise every time either... one thing you might try, is go somewhere quiet, turn off the ac and radio, and anything that makes noise, be in neutral, and push in the clutch a couple times, if a time or two you hear something that sounds like when you push the clutch that its a spinning object coasting down to a stop, and when you let out the clutch it starts again, sounds like bearings to me... thats what mine is doing....

i also sometimes hear a noise when i'm in first, sometimes it dosent start untill i've matched the clutch and actually get going, sometimes it makes the noise from as soon as i start matching and just start rolling...

just 2 cents worth of free diagnostics...

oh, one other thing thats free to check, sometime when the motors cold, pop the hood, now i'm not as familiar with your car, but on mine there was a heat shield on the exaust manifold on the front of the engine, and it had a couple small cracks in it around the bolt holes that held it to the manifold... reach down and pluck it like a guitar string and see if you can reproduce the noise.. mine ratteled pretty good so i pulled it off thinking that i could weld it up, and thats when i found the black crack in the cast manifold.. so i went to a header and no heat shield... and no more noise.
