Default Replacing a clutch

1988 Civic DX - 4dr - 5 speed - 1.5L JMD
I have done a lot of work on this car...it has been fun. Now I have to almost stand on the clutch pedal to get it to push in....I also keep having to adjust my cable at the tranny to keep from grinding gears. I am thinking this is ether the through out bearing or the rls bearing…is this a correct assessment??
Even if my assessment above is total off something is going on in the clutch area so I am thinking I might as well replace it while I am in there.....so my question is, how hard is it to replace? It looks like you need to remove the tranny from the car. Is this possible with the front end up on jack stands?? Like I said, i have done some motor work on other types of cars..(dodge truck), so I think I am capable. I just have never dealt with a clutch before so this is new territory for me.
One last question, when I get the clutch kit, what should I ask for?? Meaning, I don't know what trany I have, if it is original. All I know it is a 1.5L motor and a 5 speed tranny. Any help would be great...
Thx

Default RE: Replacing a clutch

well the tranny can be removed with the engine still in the car, removing the axles and all wiring and the header, and the tranny mounts, BUT before removing any mounts be sure to use a board on a jack or something to hold the engines oil pan so the engine doesnt try and fall out as well.
just find the engine code stamp on the motor to find out which motor it is and the trannys should use the same clutch setup, only posible difference is MAYBE the spline on the clutch disk.... but when you buy the new clutch from like off ebay i know MOST sellers give you the alignment tool, simply test it out on your old clutch and new clutch to ensure its the same thing and just bolt it all up again. not to hard if ya got some downtime to work on the car and not need it for awhile at least...

Thanks for the info...

I know where the engine code is stamped on the motor...just so I understand correctly, getting a clutch kit that fits the motor is all I need to worry about?? I will not need any info from the tranny??

This is my beater car...not having it on the road is going to kill me in gas cost but at I am figuring it will take me about a week of working on it a couple hrs a day. Thanks for the info...
