1988 Civic Hatchback 4speed manual


Today my Speedometer went crazy. It worked fine last night but this morning (temp was bout 40 degrees Fahrenheit) it went crazy. What happens is after my speed gets past about 20 mph the speedometer goes crazy and starts whining and then goes all the way past 130 and continues to whine and stay past 130 until i stop. I drove it home at about 6:00pm and the temp was probably about 60 and it did the same thing. When i got home i pulled out the cable and the boot and it is missing the spring clip that holds it in. I dont know if that is the problem or if i need a new cable or a new speedometer unit or what...

Any suggestions?

sounds like either the speed sensor or the speedo cable is possessed.

How fast do you go in second?

 

ya id replace the cable.... it might have been cold and some water got into it locken it up alittle and just jacked the cable up....

id replace that first and if that doesnt fix the problem its either in the cluster or tranny...
but most likely its jsut the cable gone bad...
