Default TRANSMISSION GRINDING

NEED SOME ADVISE FROM YOU LEARNED PROFESSIONALS CONCERNING TRANSMISSIONS. THE VEHICLE IS A 1991 HONDA CIVIC. WHEN SHIFTING FROM 1ST. TO 2ND IT MAKES A GRINDING NOISE AND SLIPS. SOMETIMES IT WILL GET INTO "SLIP MODE" AND YOU HAVE TO COME TO A STOP AND START ALL OVER AGAINN JUST BEFORE IT IS READY TO SHIFT IF I LET OFF THE GAS IT WILL SHIFT MORE NORMALLY. WITH THE HOOD UP ONE DAY I HAD MY LADY PUT IT INTO GEAR AND WAS SHOCKED TO SEE THE AMOUNT OF TRAVEL THE ENGINE HAD GOING FROM PARK TO DRIVE AND WAS WONDERING IF THAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM. IF THE MOUNTS WERE WORE OUT WOULD THAT CAUSE THE TRANSMISSION TO SLIP? IF SO HOW BIG OF A JOB IS IT TO CHANGE OUT THE MOUNTS? I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY ADVISE ANYONE MIGHT THROW MY WAY.THANKS ROCKY

I think that if your synchros are bad the trans will go out of gear, not slip. If you have a slippage problem then i think that either the clutch is worn or something is wrong with the clutch pedal. I'm not completly sure about this, but thats what i think.

I don't believe it is a manual transmission

"GOING FROM PARK TO DRIVE"

Therefore it would not be syncro or clutch.

First thing to check is your fluid level. A low fluid level will cause the tranny to slip. The next thing would be to change the filter, as a clogged filter will cause poor oil flow again causing the tranny to slip. If the level and filter are good then the problem could be a number of things. A bad pump, bad torque converter, Automatics have clutch packs (3 I believe) one of them could be going out (but doubtful).
