Hi, first post, looking for some help with an aftermarket stereo install...
First, I'm sure this has been discussed until everyone is blue in the face, but after an hour searching the forums, I got frustrated and posted my own thread.
I recently lost my '98 Civic EX coupe in a wreck, and am buying a '00 Civic EX coupe to replace it. My '98 was already wired for an aftermarket stereo when I bought it, but the '00 that I'm replacing it with still has the factory head unit. I know that I need to keep the factory unit to keep the keyless entry working, but my question is this:
I'm electronically minded in general, so...
Do I need some kind of special harness for the factory unit when installing the new one? Or, do I just need to make sure power is kept to a few certain wires?
Any and all help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks so much!!

Honestly? The easiest thing might just be to call Crutchfield, pay $15, and get the wiring harness. I soldered mine to the harness on the back of the new head unit, it plugged right into the factory harness, and I've never had a problem with either the h/u or the keyless remote. Made for a nice, clean install.
Only 96 and 97 models had the keyless receiver in the head unit. Later models have a separate reciever, so you can completely remove the stock radio and keyless will still work. You should be able to pull your aftermarket radio out of your wrecked 98 and plug it exactly into the 2000, assuming it was set up with a harness adapter.
Thank you mk for posting that!!!!!!!!
I have always wondered why people say you need to relocate the OE radio in 96-98's. I have never had to do it in my previous 98 Civic coupe, in addition to my brother's 98 sedan. Learn something new everyday.
