Default running 2 alternators

okay, so im planning on going big with my system...i really need to upgrade my power though.lol. my lights dim like crazy with only 600watts rms...so i was planning on getting a high output alternator, but i wanted to hook that up to a separate battery just for the system... then leave the stock battery and alternator for just the car...has anyone ever done this? any tips on how to wire it? ..and id like to be able to turn on my HO alt when i want to. thanks.. i think i know what to do, but i always like hearing others opinions

Basically you're replacing your A/C compressor with an alternator. It's doable, but IMHO not worth the cost.

My lights dont dim, and i have two amps with a combined rated 170 amp draw, or somewhere around there.

Before buying lots of expensive things, have you done the big three? Are your amp(s) grounded well?

How big of a system are you going with? what subs, amps, etc

well i have not done the big three because i was just planning on getting a new alt.im not going to get a crazy big one, probably 165AMP......my system i plan on going about 3000 watts rms... with kicker for my bass and most likely american bass for my highs.

If you're gonna run that kind of power, do the big 3 first.

I can't stress the importance of having solid grounds enough.

i understand that i should do the big 3...but i wasnt going to waste my wire doing it with my stock alt if i was going to get a HO alt that would be for my system...and the stock alt would just be for the stock stuff

you dont need to run 2 alts. just 1 alt will be sufficent. you can upgrade to a higher alt amp output, but upgrade your wires +/- and also get a better battery like a optima

What I would do if i were you - remove your alternator & take it to an electrical rebuilder (that rebuilds starters and alternators) and have them up the amperage to 150+AMPS (or the most they can fit in the alts casing). That should provide you with plenty of power.
