Default Basemap vs. Dynos

I know you guys will say Dyno is better, and i know it is, but is it possible to get by by just sending your ECU into say for example Skunk2, tell them your mods, they chip it for you and then send it back? I beleive this is called getting a basemap, and is this very safe? Theres nowhere within like 5 hours of me that chips ECU's/Dynos, so i think getting a basemap like this would be very convinent. Pete just had a basemap on his boosted D and he seemed to get by just fine, so if i ever plan on boosting, could i just send my OBD1 ECU into Skunk2 or somewhere and have them basemap it for me?

this is no better than buying a $20 "performance" chip off ebay. All these chips do are disable some necessary sensors and advance your timing. This=no good. Just do it right, make a day out of it, take a little road trip and do it right.

^Seriously..

You're going to end up paying money out the *** to fix all the issues a basemap will bring you down the road. Spend the money up front, get it done right, and you'll have no worries.

Also, as far as I'm concerned, there is really no point in even messing with your ecu until you go boost anyway

Way too many factors to take into account to give you a concrete number. Provided the install was sound, and mechanically everything was functioning properly, I'd say anywhere from 100-200 an hour.

Typically you get the required ecu and conversion harness FIRST. Do your boost install, install the new (chipped) ecu, and be sure that whoever did the chipping ALSO put a basemap on there for you. They will ask you what all you are running (motor, turbo specs, injector specs, etc etc etc...) give them that info, and they will build a rough basemap. This basemap will enable you to at least get the car to a Dyno shop (or to someone who street tunes), then have your **** tuned from there
