How bad is grinding gears?

I recently bought a '95 ex with a manuel transmission. Its my first car and ive never drivin standard before. How bad is it to grind the gears.. when it makes that really ugly noise?

ahh pretty bad, try not to do it... if it happens once in a while, then that is ok, everyone does it from time to time, Just do'nt do it all the time. cause you will ruin your tranny

Grinding your gears is bad. When you hear that noise, just think of you taking your gearset and putting it to a workbench based grinder and ripping the teeth off.
