vinyl wrap information
Okay, I thought I would put this out there for some of you that are interested in this or are not educated about it.
mod's feel free to move this thread i thought this would be a good place to put it.
The biggest and most asked question about a wrap is "does it mess up my origional paint?" the short answer is yes.
I have installed and removed hundreds of wraps in the last 10 years so I see first hand what it does to paint. Honestly I have yet to have a big enough problem that the customer is upset about how his paint looks. Most paint problems are not from the vinyl but from the paint being poor quality or starting to peal or rusting etc... the vinyl its self actually protects the paint in most cases especially on wraps that are well maintained. if you leave your car out in the sun alot or if you live in south they just dont last as long, the sun takes a toll on the ink and lamination and really melts the vinyl to the car.
I would say that there are more benifits to wraping then painting. YOU CAN REMOVE IT, that is a huge benifit. Think about it if you paint a car a crazy color and go to sell it chances are no one wants your crazy color but you. crazy design, personalized designs you would have to paint over or spray with primer to cover, which looks worse. If the paint job comes out bad you can't just pull it off you have to repaint or if you are like me and change your mind a lot paint gets really expensive and you are with out your car for longer(macco special not included) as where vinyl isnt expensive in comparison and can be installed most times in 1 day. I have wraped a crown vic in 5 hours inclucing front and back bumpers which often time take more time to do then the rest of the car.
time is an enemy of paint and vinyl. the longer a wrap stays on a car the harder it is to take it off and the more damage it does. Paint isnt forever either how many cars have you seen with sun marks or faiding? if you put a wrap on a car with good paint it will preserve it to a degree especialy if you take care of it and don't leave it out all day every day, park under a tree etc...
They make air-egress vinyl now that does much less dammage to a vehicle's base paint. 3m, avery, orical etc... all make a product with this available see your local sign company or wrap specialist.
let me know if you have more questions about this, and sorry about any spelling or grammer errors im an installer not an english major
