the best place for an intercooler is the front, cause more air will get to it . we all seem to have that one figured. the reason that subaru puts their intercoolers on top of the engine is that the flat-four, is well... flat. which leaves a convienent place for the intercooler, the top mounting means that you can get away with less pipingand the bright side is that there is less likelyhood of the intercooler being damaged by stuff flying off the road.
