Take That!
Is there any solid evidence for this contention in the U.S.? For example, does the death penalty deter murder? Likewise, our prisons are filled to the brim with inmates serving very long sentences for drug-related offenses. Has drug use declined?

Making Alcohol illegal will never happen as the industry is far too large to topple. The number of jobs that would be lost would be astronomical. Now, imagine with me... ...if alcohol wasn't in existence and was created and introduced to the US today it would be considered a class A drug (along with Cocaine/crack, Heroin, Ecstasy, LSD, Shrooms, Meth(pending)) because of its addictiveness and extreme effects on the human body/mind.
That aside, I flippin' love drinking and am damn glad that it isn't a class A drug!!
Now, a class C drug, cannabis, should be grown, prepared, and sold by the government. And legalize, of course. This would make it no longer a "gateway" drug as the buyer would no more need to meet up with shady dealers that may or may not lace the product. Sell it like Tobacco products, heavily taxed.
Hmm, what else was there... ...ahh Welfare. I speak for Milwaukee, WI when I say welfare is a pain in the **** to get/maintain. My own grandmother had to go on welfare after she was laid off. MY GRANDMA, LAID OFF! She had to have a minimum of 5 interviews a week to maintain coverage. Also, she had to have each potential employer fill out this "why we didn't hire you form" for the welfare office. But, she DID get another job eventually. Go Grams!
I love that the Rep's candidate for VP has a knocked up 17 year daughter! What's her number! Lucky for the guy that the age of consent in Alaska is 16. Plus, when McCain has a heart attack and dies, is Palin capable of being president and still have time to care for her 4 month old child with Downs? Even as VP? Is that sexist for me to say?

Many of the imprisoned had become dealers to support their own drug habit. With a felony or misdemeanor on their record, it is very difficult or nearly impossible for many of these offenders to find employment. Therefore, it would be more productive to rehabilitate and skip the criminal justice system.
