Moving the distributor forwards or backwards either advances or retards the timing. If you advance the timing, you could gain a few ponies, but you'd have to run 91 octane, otherwise you'll get engine knock with 87 or 89. Set the distributor back to TDC, like everyone's suggesting and you'll be okay.
