98 civic exhaust manifold cracked
my 98 civic lx exhaust manifold cracked just above the catalytic converter. i was told this is common.
does anybody know if honda has a recall or tsb or what?
seems like a bad design problem to me-it can't take the heating/cooling cycle.
it's the one with the catalytic converter built-in.
anyone got a used one?

RE: 98 civic exhaust manifold cracked
If you have had some practice at welding, then if it is a hairline crack that is leaking, then all you have to do is weld it up to seal the air leak. Many people have done this in effort to save them the factory prices for a new manifold.

RE: 98 civic exhaust manifold cracked
I had a cracked exhaust manifold, I went ahead and replaced it with a honda made one. It was around 380.00 bucks from ebay. There are aftermarket brands available but they were not for California-emissions cars. I have seen the same one available saying that are CARB approved, I didn't want to chance it when I had to smogged my car. Also, the aftermarket brands Cat don't last as long as the hondas. BTW, my exhaust cracked when I had about 235,000 miles.

RE: 98 civic exhaust manifold cracked
I just replaced my exhaust on my 96 ex and after I pulled it off I noticed that the upper manifold was cracked in 2 or three places. If it is the same part I'll give you my old lower manifold. You have to pay shipping. But if you're planning on building your car now would be a good time to buy a header. You can find a good one cheep on ebay.
