Default missing part.

hey, i need a little knowledge to make my car better.
below is a picture of my engine, which is missing a (at least one) connective valve. it screws on to the area circled, which originates in the exhaust manifold. It should pump hot air up to somewhere, which should prevent water in the air in my carburetor from freezing and messing my **** up. I dont, however, know where it goes, or even if this is really the problem. (my car stalls and wont start for a while when its really cold out and its been sitting) the guy i bought it off, being a bit of an idiot, wasn't much help either.

anyone here know stuff about old (87) civics and where this is supposed to go so I can jimmy one together? I suspect it goes to the air scrubber, which is underneath the intake for the air filter (red arrow) but i honestly dont know.

it might be something like a heater valve that runs from the exhaust to the carbed intake valve to help with cold start ups. i know my old 86crx had it on the motor/intake. you can just buy a new metal like dryer hose from autozone for it, but its hard to tell with your picture... can you post a more complete engine bay shot or afew?

alright man, sorry that took so long.
so heres 2 shots, the first is the whole engine bay, sorry its pretty gnarly looking right now, been driving alot of pretty muddy backroads around here.
the second is the area of concern. the bit that runs from the exhaust manifold that was circled in the previous picture is in the bottom right, and it either leads to the lower hole with the bolt holes on either side or to the air scrubber attached to the air filter casing (the small upper hole)

so you curious about the lower oval opening on the intake manifold, or on the air intake?

if the air intake. that bottom angled circle piece is for a heater tube that should run around the manifold somewhere... it doesnt connect to the exhaust itself but more less a heat shield around the manifold. it could be a swaped motor.... my 86crx had the same carbed intake but wasnt a DOHC motor....

the top angled part should have a plastic tube that runs around the battery area but not really needed.
but im not sure what that side oval opening is..... might be something for a egr valve.

you might try asking over on http://www.redpepperracing.com/forums/index.php?

i used to be over there when i had my 84 and 86 crx and they where very helpfull on the older hondas!

if it doesnt want to run when its cold out simply run a metal bendable hose to run from that lower tube and zip tie it around the manifold so it kinda sucks air off of the header. not perfect but if its a motor swap thats the best you can do...

all it does is suck the hot air off around the runing motors manifold to help warm the motor up faster.
i never had a problem with water hurting anything on my crxs.

tho i do feel sorry for ya with that carbed setup!
if the motor runs bad it could be 1 of a hundred vacume lines leaking.... if you cannt get it tweaked out then i would suggest look into swaping to fuel injected system. its quite common with the older hondas to remove that carbed crap! you could also devac it and it might run better also. i never devaced mine but the guy that bought my 86crx did it and said it helped the performance very nice.
definatly check out that redpepperracing forum im sure theres some guys on there that can really help ya out or even find some parts for it. i havent been on that site in 3-4years so not sure how it is now but it was very nice site.
good luck!
i had problems with my 86crx carb with the secondaries not kicking in and the motor would not run its best. could need a carb rebuild as well....

sweet dude, thanks, question answered. I think i might get the carb rebuilt, and i just found out it is a swapped engine. there is a solid metal pipe set up that runs down to the exhaust manifold (circled bit in first picture) so If i just jimmy the two together, i shouldn't have a problem. Yea, i hate carbed engines, but whatever, the car cost me next to nothing and its 4wd so itt'l do the trick.

heh, and about the vacuum leaks, i just found and fixed a leak that was causing 2k idle speeds. sweet deal.

well if you rebuild the carb do yourself a HUGE FAVOR and get a digital camera and takes TONS OF PICTURES OF THE VACUME LINES of where you pull it from and where it runs!
i did that on my 84 that had a bad carb and i lucked out and found a rebuilt one for sale on that forum but removing all those hoses and figuring them all out again even with pictures was a huge PITA!!!

i do miss my old crx tho. i wish i never sold it because it was actualy in great condition for its age and i never really realized that and i ended up selling it way to cheap

funny thing was i bought the car from a local guy for 500bucks, put new tires on it, sold it back to him for 800bucks and then shortly after he sold it back to me for only 400bucks. LMFAO ya it was funny as hell how that all worked out... wish i kept that t hing because a dirt cheap car was sweet to have! that 86crx is what got me hooked on hondas!!!!! i had it when gas prices started to sky rocket and i had a fullsize chevy truck that loved gas, and i just moved into my friends house/apartment to help him pay rent when his wife left him. so it helped us both out for that year.LOL
