Default Swap Dead D17 for D15 ??? - 2002 Civic non-vtec

My son baked his 2002 Honda civic engine ( never checked his oil ).
I won't fix it FOR him, but I'll help.
We found a D15B engine imported from Japan (non-vtec).
My understanding is that everything should port right across from the D17A1 (non-vtec):
  • manifolds
  • plug coils
  • Air Conditioning
  • belts
  • transmission
  • electrical harness connectors
  • etc, etc.
Can anyone confirm this for me?

I appreciate the help.

So... um... no.

1. Putting an older engine into a car is technically illegal on a federal level. Once that doesn't deter you, here's what else (and more that I'm unaware of) that you will face.
2. D17 has no fuel return, the D15B does. You will either run a return line or see if parts from the D17 will swap over for no return.
3. I believe OBD2 versions are different, so the ECU won't just be plug and play.
4. Along the same line - how will you pass an inspection if one is required in your state? Due to that OBD2 thing it will be a bit of an effort to make this work.

Like I said, there will be other things. It's not impossible, just more difficult than swapping over something similar.

Inspection is not an issue here (Alberta, Canada).
The folks selling the engine have said that they have sold a number of these for this exact scenario (apparently the D17's have issues with the head).
They said that we just swap all the D17 hardware, fuel lines, manifolds across (they are supposed to fit - block and ports are all the same).
This is what I was hoping to confirm here.
IF that is true, and all the hardware and sensors are the same, would the ECU know anything different?

Thanks again for the clarification.

Here are the images of the D15B engine they sent me:

All the hoses and connectors look the same to me.
Not sure if this helps answer my question or not.

Any thought on the matter would be appreciated.
Thanks again for the help.

It's close enough that if you swap literally everything it should work. If you don't need to worry about it being legal and inspected than go ahead. The D17 was quite an abomination in the D-series lineup. The fuel return issue still stands. I hope it just swaps over and you don't need to do anything, but if it doesn't you'll have a "fun" project adding a return line.

If I am swapping the intake manifold straight across, the fuel return shouldn't be an issue at all (unless I am missing something).

I did come across this video too, hopefully it helps others:

Great info on the timing belt too! (1 tooth shorter than the D17A1 timing Belt - I was wondering if it was going to be different).

. . . having said that, if the belt is 1 tooth longer but the spacing between the teeth is the same, the only thing that could be off is the tensioner travel - so I am not sure why the fellow in the video would have had a "Ticking" noise with the D17A1 belt.

Discussion point - anyone?

I'm going to give it a go and will let everyone know how it all goes.

Thanks for the help StifflersMom.

Hey man I am having the same issue with my 02 civic the d17a2 vtec motor went. Where did you guys find the JDM motor from as I am also from Alberta Canada and would like to find someplace local to buy the motor rather than getting it shipped.
Thank you

It was north east of Edmonton . . . I can't think of the name at the moment.
Looks like it was about 5 years ago now.
If I find it, I'll reply again here.
Good luck.
