Default weird engine noise while driving...

hey guys. been a while since i posted on here. anyways, long story short, wrecked my civic and bought another one same year and model - 5 spd 96 Si. (will post pics soon before / after accident)

Anyways, so my problem with this car is that while driving, i hear this weird raspy / rumbly sound coming from the engine when i accelerate and decelerate (no hangers, latches, bolts loose or anything, and no it's not resonator or exhaust, it's very obvious its coming from somewhere under the hood)

now, when i go to check for the noise while idling, it wont happen. it's only when the wheels are spinning when i am driving so i can't check it by just putting the car in neutral and just revving the engine trying to hear it. The car drives fine, and accelerates well. The only issue is from going from 2nd to 3rd gear (when mashing the pedal) it kind of "crunches" its way into 3rd, and also when engine braking going about say 50 or maybe 60km from neutral and putting it into second gear, it crunches into it as well. other than that the car is pretty sound, only 124k on it.

Any ideas of what the sound might be?

thanks in advance,

96' SI? Is it an auto trans?

Edit: sorry I read it again and found it was a 5 speed.

What about wheel bearings?

Is the clutch slipping?

Have checked and replaced the transmission fluid (use Honda MT fluid)?

Have you inspected the drive axles?

Does it keep making the noise if you shift into neutral while the car is rolling? If so it could be a CV joint, wheel bearing, brake, etc. or possibly still something inside the transmission.

when the car is rolling while put in neutral or with the clutch pushed down it doesn't make the noise, it sounds normal. It's only when i am accelerating or decelerating in any gear, really noticable in 1st 2nd and 3rd though. It's almost like a ****ty VTEC noise that kicks in at like 2500 rpm if that helps explain it.... and just to clarify before anyone asks, it is NOT the VTEC, the sound is loud enough that it actually overrides the VTEC noise (i can still hear when VTEC engages at 5500 rpm, but it's hard with the stupid engine noise obviously)

again, thanks in advance
