what to look for when buying a civic
There's not that many weak spots with hondas, other than rust and timing belts. I don't look for a particular spot, I just do an overall check of the car:
What I do when looking at a car is get in, start it up without the stereo or air on, test all the options, let it warm up a bit. When I start, let it rev up high (5K)then shift and listen to how it shifts (no grinds, other noises it shouldnt make). While on a (not busy) road, I get it up to 40km/h and drive like I'm going around pilons and listen for any clicks, squeaks, abnormal noises etc. I test braking (full out) then go on the highway (120km/h) and listen for abnormal noises, rattles, clicks, etc. manually check the tires, check sidewalls for cracking. check over the interior, check if the timing belt was done (should be done every 100000kms). And then offer him 10% less of what he's asking, and then haggle from there. Also check under the car for rust, check the rear wheel wells for rust to see how bad it is.
(optional) Put it up on ramps and check the exhaust system for rust. While you're under there, manually check the axles for anything abnormal. front and rear suspension too.
Good luck!
