Default 5 Speed Manual fluid question...

I have a 91 DX civic with a 5 speed. It switches kind of hard in between gears, or maybe i expect too much from it. My question is what kind of fluid do i put in the gearbox, because i think at 159,000 its time for a change. I heard from some people that i should be putting 10-30w, which got me really confused since i remember that 85-90w or the gearbox oil is what usually manual transmitions use.... is this a honda thing only? is it important what type you put in it??? will it help the switching of gears?
thanks in advance,
tony

Manual transmissions don't really use any transmission fluid per se... It's really just oil. The best brand for transmission oil that is recommended by most people is called Redline. http://www.redlineoil.com/

HONDA manual transmisions just use motor oil, most cars use either gear oil or i think some even use ATF. but yeah, just use 10-30, if you are having problems, maybe go with 10-40 or even thicker, but it will hurt power a very little bit.

thank you again. since you guys are so helpfull maybe you can tell me if there is anything i can add to the oil in the 5 speed when i will do a change to make it shift smoother... its like im fighting with it when the car is cold. There is no CRRRRRrrrr sound just really tough to get it in the gears.

With a car with high mmileage I would recomend Lucas oil treatment. When you add it make sure your motor is hot because if you don't it will go straight to the bottom because it is so thick.
