not quite, the old school people will tell you that 18s are only for rap low's and can't play the tight rock double kickers and that 10's won't hit the lows and are only for the tight bass but are completely wrong. my best friend just had 2 FI BTL 18's in his jimmy in a ported box which people say isn't good for rock and it played some of the tightest bass lines ive ever heard. and in my winter car ive got a memphis mojo 10 that hits lower than just about any system in town ive had people come up to me and ask what ya got in there 2 15's or something? and when i tell them they can't believe it.
also you should never mix sub sizes as a rule.

it just all depends on how you build the enclosure. I've built ported 15 boxes that sound "decent" on rock music. the basic rule of thumb is 10s are better for rock. they don't have to move so much surface area to make the punchy bass notes. 15s and above are a lot better for the low bass because lets face it, if it's a decent 15, it takes more power to move in general, plus more power because you're moving that much more surface area. it's just simple physics. people don't use 8s in bass comps for a reason. although i saw one do 18 8s in a suburban, talk about gay!
