+1 on VIS being a great carbon brand. another good brand out there is Seibon.

and also if it dulls out, you can actually sand it with 1600-2000 grit sandpaper and buff it with polishing compound followed by a layer of wax and it will make it shine like new. I have had to do this twice cuz after a while I get lazy and stop waxing it and it dulls out really bad. but this is only recommended if it is dull beyond being able to buff it back to being shiny.

Sig-

What brand is your hood? It looks great with the red paint. I have a Seibon OEM hood on order and will post picks next weekend. My 2-door is black and I think it will look nice also. Can't wait since my current hood has a "harelip" and a few small dings.

Great tip about sand/polish/buff and keeping up the shine. Tucson summers can be a bitch on CF but it's worth it. I polish & wax 2-3 times yearly anyways. Peace.

What do you guys think? My deductable is $500. Should I bother with insurance? Should I fix it myself? (I don't even know how to start...) Should I go for a carbon fiber hood, even though it's a little ricey for a stock engine?
Get a carbon fiber hood. don't worry about looking ricey. and it lowers weight

They don't always look ricey. They look pretty sick most of the time. Go for CF. And insurance is GAAAYYY. I wouldn't go through them and pay the deductible. They'll find some stupid friggin way to jack up your premium.. even if it was the stupid branches fault.. I voted for CF

I actually have a no name brand that I got really cheap off ebay. Some company was clearancing them around christmas time so I only payed about $250 shipped. but believe me if I could do it again I would have saved my money and got either a Seibon or VIS. the amount of money saved is no where near worth the effort it has taken to revive and maintain my hood. I have to use de-oxidizing compound and wax it every week or two just to keep it shiny. Seibons and VIS dont take anywhere near that much work.

luckily boat stuff works really well cuz the gel coating on a CF hood very closely resembles the gel coating on boats.
