yea, now that i think of it, a guy in my class had that same problem. he'd turn his key and get nothin but if he tried er a few times it'd work. i'd say that's more likely than the safety switch. i don't think they're known to go.

ya in the starting system theres like a gate in the wiring and if the clutch pedal isn't pushed in all the way the the gate doesn't close and circuit connect to get power to the starter the same way with automatics if the not in park or nuetral then you can't start then cause that gate ins't closeing so you switch that the pedal pushes in probably isn't being pushed in all the way
