i know my 96 tacoma ticks on start up because there isnt any oil up in the rockers yet. try adjusting your valves. what kind of climate conditions do you live in?

Well, the Honda dealer said everything was 'normal', that that ticking is normal for a Civic engine. Coincidentally, a coworker drove me to the dealer last night in his '03 Civic, and his engine ticked too, at idle when warmed up. Not quite as loud as mine though, but nonetheless...he thought I was bringing bad luck to his car.

I've heard that a slightly thicker oil when warm may quiet the engine down a bit, but I can't say for sure if it's the injectors ticking away as they open or close, or if it's the valvetrain. IMHO, you want the engine oil as thin as possible (within reason, of course) during startup though, particularly when it's cold. As I understand it, the two numbers in the oil designation stand for the viscosity when cold and hot, the lower the number, the less viscous.

FYI, it's been REALLY cold here lately, -24C this morning, and I've only really noticed it ticking since it's gotten cold.

Yeah my car has the same ticking. But after it's warmed up it goes away.
Well I gotta go replace the oil pan now.

I went to a local mechanic and he took a stethoscope to the engine after it warmed up and was doing it's ticking thing (great tool, btw...). The injectors sounded ok, the engine valves/rockers sounded fine....when it put the scope up to a part near the throttle, a loud clanging was heard in the scope. The part had a little grey label with blue letters on it saying:

Denso MX136200-2262 PCS39

Sorry I can't be much more help, but anyone know what this part is? I did a little poking on the 'net and found that it may be a fuel injector sensor, but I'm not sure. Not sure if this is a 'major' part or what...can anyone help?

EDIT: Looks like this:
