Possibly the time he has been driving since he made this thread made the ECU ready to be smogged, since it turned out nothing was wrong with the backup power. I guess the 40 miles wasn't enough. And then coincidentally, his cat was bad.

That's my guess.

Yeah. Replacing the battery cable may have solved the ECU reset problem, making the ECU "ready" and thereby allowing retrieval of a bad cat code.

honestly im still not really sure how this turned out to be the problem, that just what my mechanic told me
