Default Uncontrollable reving of engine...

I do not know anything or much about cars and their engines. I have a 2000 Honda Civic Ex and I have recently started having problems with mine. I don't think it is too serious but it's very annoying and it does need to get fixed. I just don't have the money to take it to a mechanic to get professionally fixed. Anyway recently when I turn on my car I noticed that while the car is just idling, the engine revs up by itself and continuously goes up and down non stop therefor the rpm's go up as well. It jumps to 2 and then back down again and then back to 2 and just continues to rev up the the engine. What is the problem and is there anyway I can fix the problem myself with directions?

Idle air control valve, sounds almost textbook. Try cleaning it with this DIY: https://www.hondacivicforum.com/foru...ad.php?t=62836
