This ridiculous cold snap is doing strange things to my car.
  • My battery has been tested by the cold for sure. I tried to start it in 6 degree weather and it almost didn't start. Been good ever since though. Hasn't gotten that cold again.
  • The cold start knock has gotten much worse. There's a distinct knock and also a valve tick. The part that no one can explain is that both go away when the car is warmed up. True knocks don't go away.
  • The engine made a strange whirring noise the other day. I was late for work and didn't let it warm up for more than 30 seconds. I put it in gear, rolled out to the intersection, and when the light turned green I accelerated normalish. I heard the usual sound of RPMs going up, then a strange metal on metal whirring noise. I let off the gas and it stopped. Then accelerated again and it didn't come back.
  • My steering column started popping once when I make a left turn. Only does it intermittently.
  • When I'm up to speed (45-50) and start braking hard, there's a strange groaning noise that comes from the passenger side front. Sounds like metal groaning under pressure. Don't know how else to describe it. This is the first year I've heard anything like it on this car.

I actually have been having these same problems when its REALLY cold. One guess of mine is because my car has over 200k miles so in my opinion its just starting to get old. And also i have had to push start my car a couple times before because it wouldnt start in the cold. Just get a new battery and it should be fine. And for the knock what i always do it just let my car sit and idle for a good few minutes before driving it. Maybe make sure your good on oil too!

might try to run some seafoam thru the oils crankcase and then change the oil.
if it still pings alittle then it could just be cold. my truck has a knock in the cold for about 1 min or so.

Yeah my car ticks a lot in the cold. Just make sure the oil level is topped up and that will minimize it.

Well I keep saying this project is dead but I keep having to do stuff to the car.

My LED turn signals have to go. They were AWESOME when I did 90% of my driving at night. I used to work midnights. But now that I'm on days they're not bright enough. My roommate (who is a cop) was following me home after work and he said he could barely see them, so if he'd have probably given me a ticket if I weren't so awesome. (I know. I'm just that awesome.)

So, LEDs are going bye bye and stock goes back in. Fronts will likely become Silverstar Ambers. Sidemarkers will stay incandescent once I install them in the spring (read: buy a dremel). Rears will be whatever bulbs I still have in the parts box.

My local shop guy has a B18b1 out of a 97 Integra LS for sale. $500, $700 with auto tranny, all of it from oil pan to dizzy. Same engine as before, just a little cheaper. He wants to get it out of the shop. Been there for months. I want it so bad but I can't afford it since my lease is up soon and I have to find a place to live in April. Gotta save for deposits and all.

What LEDs did you buy? I have LED bulbs in my brake lights and they're bright as hell.

Apparently the mid range ones aren't bright enough. I dont remember which ones but they weren't the most expensive or the cheapest.

Well ****. We had some sudden heavy rains. I couldn't see ANYTHING. I drove right into 2 feet of water. Couldn't see it coming. Had no warning. It ripped my front lip halfway off.

I went ahead and pulled it completely off, but the 3M tape isn't coming off at all. The lip is broken on the passenger side. It'll never go back on unless I get some awesome glue or fiberglass it. The paint got trashed pretty bad too. So yeah, that lip is pretty much toast.

That's not the worst of it. I think I got some water in the engine. It wasn't idling right at all. When I drove home, the car was bogged down until about 4K rpms. The whole car shook a little and the engine resonated strangely through the exhaust. I could hear and feel that the car isn't running right. I don't know where to start. Im worried most about the engine. I've gotta keep the car running for another year. Worst case, there's a guy with a 1997 LS swap for $700, engine and tranny only. I'd have to get axles, mounts, and a few other parts to make it work, then pay to have it installed because I have nowhere to work. Not the best outlook.

I fixed the bulb in my CEL so I can now tell that my CEL isn't on. Whatever the problem is, I'm not getting an error code.

As a last ditch effort I did an Italian Tune to see if the problem was in the cylinders. I drove about a mile and a half in 2nd gear at 60mph. Car still bogs down in the low RPMs at low speeds. Seems to be better at high speeds. Also, my brakes seemed weaker somehow. Dunno if that's connected. Any ideas? I really hope my engine didn't drown. I can't afford an engine swap with all these medical bills piling up.

I think your air filter is just damp. I got mine wet a year or two ago (from having no fender liners) and it bogged down until it finally stopped raining and the filter had time to dry out. To test this, take your filter off (just for testing purposes) and see if it idles properly and such.
