Hope it works out too.

Will break the engine in, make sure it's all good to go, then maybe do some minor suspension stuff. Strut tower bar, etc.

The engine is in the back seat and it's just one mile to the shop. Just as planned.

It's in, and it runs. The idle is really screwed up though. Gotta work on that today.

We worked from 9am to 9pm on this swap.

Things that went wrong/were unexpected: needed new alternator belt, PS belt, and AC belt, needed a distributor O ring (had to go to the dealership), had a broken pintle cap on injector 2, found a hole in the frame from a previous wreck, driver's side torque mount was ghetto rigged with a tiny self tapping screw, on initial startup, there was a BAD grinding noise that turned out to be that shield that covers the lower part of the transmission, we had to ghetto fab an intake from my old y7 CAI, there's a rust hole in my exhaust about 8 inches before the muffler, and the idle is all sorts of screwed up right now.

Pics and stuff when it's done.

sorry, I have a bad habit of only reading the most recent page of project threads. I got the impression that because of the different sized z6 rotor you couldnt have cruise control?

There is a y8 TB at my junkyard, if you are still interested in the rotor, I can snag it for you when I go tomorrow. They prolly would charge less than $5 for it.

There is also a y8 OEM intake if you dont wanna keep your ghetto one, but I'm not sure what they would charge for that. There is a clean 2000 EX with 60k miles there that I have been harvesting organs from for months. Let me know if you need anything.

Did you vacuum cap the Cold Start Assist on the y8 manifold? That would cause a wacky idle if you forgot about it like I did.

I used a 96-98 manifold, so I didn't have the cold start assist to contend with.

I may have to take you up on the rotor and intake box. I can't find one of either locally. I'm still not convinced that the IACV is not bad, though, and I've read up on plenty of swaps that used B series rotors and they worked fine. I don't think that affects cruise control.

Sorry to hear about all the problems. When I put a y8 Im on my y7, I had an extremely high idle at first. I think I put the y8 rotor on the y7 throttle body wrong or had tightened the throttle cable a bit too much and the throttle plate was open too much. If you haven't already, you could check that out by taking off the intake and just looking into the TB. I'm glad everything else went okay, though. It's probably better that you found out about the hole in the frame and the exhaust.

It IDLES!

The IACV and/or TPS were bad. Switched back to my known good one from the old engine and it ran fine. The guy who helped me swap it in is gonna come by later today and we're gonna reset the valve lash. (It's AWFUL right now. TAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAP.) I'm not happy with the throttle cable. I think I was sold a "y8" cable that was actually a y7 one. The cable didn't look that much different from what I had. They seemed the same length. Can someone with a y8 take a picture of that corner of the engine bay so I can see how the throttle cable is routed?

Here are a few random pictures from the process...

Old one almost ready to come out:

Everything bolted up, getting ready to put the harness on. Yes, I wanted to clean the transmission. No, I didn't have time.

At this point, we went ahead and yanked the old damaged temporary oil pan off the car and swapped on the new one. I thought it was a cool picture. There's where the dip stick sits in the engine, just for reference.

Short video if the first start that freaked us the hell out:

It was actually running perfectly, but we didn't realize that the cover plate on the underside of the transmission was bent, so all of those bolts that hold the flywheel against the torque converter were rubbing against the plate, making that AWFUL noise. We took that off and it ran nicely. Bent it back and put it on later.

So I guess once the valve lash is set, the hole in my exhaust is fixed, and I do something different with the throttle cable, everything will be nice.

I haven't figured out how to post pics yet, but I can tell you that's a y7 throttle cable. My y8 cable is just long enough to go from the throttle cable stay on the IM to around the brake master cylinder, and then through the firewall. I'm glad you got it to idle. The engine looks really nice!
